Since South Africa won the right to host the 2010 FIFA World Cup back in 2004, the country has been through some major changes, with the announcement of a host of multibillion-rand infrastructure projects.
The government has committed billions to building or renovating 10 World Cup Stadiums, improving the nation’s airports, roads and rail networks, as well building the Gautrain, a high-speed rail link between Johannesburg, Pretoria and Johannesburg International Airport, with the first phase scheduled to be ready in time for 2010.
A study by Grant Thornton estimated that the World Cup would bring in an additional R21.3bn into South Africa’s economy, and create nearly 160,000 new jobs.
