Project description:
The concept of the Oppenheimer Stadium 2010 Legacy project is to upgrade the existing structure of the stadium as per the 2010 Host City Bid and candidate city plans.
Location:
City of Matlosana/Klerksdorp - Orkney
Project rationale:
The Oppenheimer stadium was accepted as one of 13 Candidate City Stadiums for the 2010 Soccer World Cup. Council and AngloGold Ashanti (Pty) ltd facilitated the bid and were successful.
Due to common national challenges, however, the stadium and city were not successful as host city status but have been earmarked as a base camp.
The council is aggressively marketing the city as a 2010 World Cup Soccer base camp. The stadium will be utilized for PSL, Umvela and Vodacom league games, to name a few lucrative opportunities.
The stadium is an R84 Million asset owned by council and has the potential to become a sustainable multipurpose venue if upgraded according to Fifa standards.
The Department of Sports, Arts and Culture commissioned a business plan for the host city bid. Figures are based on this plan.
