Cape Town’s Green Point Stadium is on track to be handed over to the City of Cape Town by its contractors on 14 December 2009.
The contractors, Murray and Roberts and WBHO, began work on the stadium a little over two years ago, in March 2007.
The major concrete work to Green Point Stadium has been completed with only finishes now left to add, including seating, lighting, cabling, VIP suites, external cladding, media facilities, IT etc.
Construction on the roof of the stadium is also progressing and is expected to be finished in September this year. The update says the stadium is now 70% complete.
The stadium will have seating for 68,000 during the World Cup – a number stipulated by FIFA – however once the event is over this will be reduced to 55,000, when the stadium will be handed over to an operator for a lease, likely to be for between 10 and 30 years.
The stadium operator – expected to be a consortium of Stade de France and the South African sports marketing company SAIL - will pay the City 30% of earnings before tax.
