The much-trumpeted 94 000-seater Soccer City stadium in Johannesburg, which is to be used for the opening match of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, is almost complete according to one of the project directors.

Mike Moody, a Grinaker-LTA/Interbeton Soccer City joint-venture project director, said the stadium is about 92% complete, in an interview with Engineering News.

“The stadium construction is progressing well and ready for handover in October. We are busy with touch-ups in the interior and all the externals such as parking and the roads will be finished in December, in time for January 2010 completion deadline,” said Moody.

The Soccer City stadium, once completed, will be the biggest stadium ever built for a soccer World Cup event. It is also easily the biggest in Africa.
