Inspiration behind the Gondwana project in Mossel Bay
In this specific project the positioning of the structure played a big role. Attention was paid in placing the house so that one could truly embrace the magnificent views. A double volume structure was therefore built, using a roof that pitched upwards to the mountain peaks and sky. The thatch roof allowed the building to merge respectfully with its surroundings.
Due to the location, a wrap around deck and balconies were added to the house to enjoy the splendid views of the mountains from all areas. The entrance into the house is through a glass and wooden door that gives one only a glimpse of the view to heighten the sense of anticipation and drama. Once into the main living area of the house you are overwhelmed by the breathtaking vistas through the stack-away glass folding doors. The main open plan living area consists of a lounge to the left of the room, dining table situated in the middle and kitchen to the right of the room. The open plan concept enhances the feeling of space and allows for free flowing movement throughout. The double volume maximises the openness of the space and allows for a feature fireplace that is clad with stone and decorated with railway sleepers which adds to the visual drama achieved by using different materials.
The surface interest abounds in the form of contrasting textures (leathers, animal skins, linen) with details such as animal horn, ostrich-egg shell. The pattern is largely limited to what occurs in nature in the form of zebra skins. The furniture in the lounge and dining area were chosen for their comfort and resilience to the humid bushveld conditions. It is also unpretentious and classic, with deep leather sofas, teak coloured furniture and a handsome collection of art and artefacts, which create a home-from-home atmosphere. Rugs and scatter cushions are made out of animal skin like zebra and kudu hides, which add to the safari theme. With specially selected handcrafted chandeliers and wall horn lights, a peaceful atmosphere is undoubtedly created in the living area. Furnishings on the deck range from sun lounges to hammocks, director’s chairs and lanterns.
The lodge’s bedrooms consist of four en-suite bedrooms. Two of the four bedrooms are found on the ground floor while the master bedroom and a guest room are situated in the attic on the first floor. All bedrooms have mosquito nets that feature prominently and the colour scheme in the bedrooms is of a calming palette with focus areas showing accent materials. Inviting Faux Bear throws lay at the bottom of each bed and adds to the theme. Deco detail like bedside lamps are made out of ostrich egg shell and the lampshades out of porcupine needles. The master bedroom en-suite has a zebra bath that is positioned perfectly to allow one to take full advantage of the views. In the attic a study can be found overlooking the main living area from where you can also enjoy the vista and interact with guests while working.
The key element in the interior was to incorporate the big five into the concept as well as creating an interior that would be filled with drama, antiques, mystery, nostalgia, style, the glamour of a Hollywood set and grand wood, glass and grass architecture with mountains surrounding you.
