The Small and Medium Enterprise Development Programme (SMEDP) is a cash grant, made available as an investment incentive by the Department of Trade and Industry (the dti), to promote the growth of local and foreign investment in South Africa. The grant is available to new investments as well as to expanding operations, and is based on a number of qualifications and criteria. The amount of assistance that a proposed project will be granted is based on the qualifying assets it possesses.

The SMEDP offers a range of incentives other than the broad SMEDP grant. These incentives, under the umbrella of the SMEDP, aim to create wealth, generate employment, develop entrepreneurship and promote empowerment in South Africa by stimulating local investment while also driving foreign direct investment into South Africa.

All applications can be made to the Manufacturing Development Board (MDP) at the dti, no later than 180 days after commencement of production or prior to any proposed expansion. The grant period is limited to no more than 36 months, and is paid out quarterly. Application forms are available on the dti website, or by request from the dti office itself.
