Home to 10.5 million people, Gauteng is the smallest, wealthiest and most populous (per square metre) of all nine provinces in South Africa.

The province generates 33% of South Africa’s gross domestic product (GDP). More than 70 international banks, stockbrokers and insurance companies operate in this province proving that “it all starts here”

Gauteng also boasts the finest and most highly-developed infrastructure on the African continent: a well maintained and ever increasing road, rail and air infrastructure, which connects the province to cities in Africa.

Gauteng Department of Economic Development (DED)

The Gauteng Department of Economic Development (DED), a subsidiary of the Gauteng Provincial Government, is responsible for ensuring that the right framework is in place to foster economic growth and job creation in the province.

The department is also responsible for ensuring that sound financial management policies and structures are in place within the Gauteng provincial government.

Main Responsibilities:

The department plays a crucial role in building Gauteng as a Globally Competitive City Region. In line with this vision the department formulated a strategy called the Growth and Development strategy (GDS).

The GDS comprises of a number of strategies that have been put in place to ensure the sustained growth and development of the economy through the formulation of agencies and support of special projects. These agencies include GEDA, GEP, Blue IQ, GFC, Gauteng Gambling Board, GTA, Dinokeng and Cradle of Human Kind.

"To become a centre of excellence providing economic policy direction, development facilitation, financial management leadership and contributing to a conducive environment for labour absorbing economic growth and poverty reduction in Gauteng".

What services does the department offer to the public?
We have Consumer Affairs, which helps the public/consumer lodge a complaint about unfair business practice, and we also have the Liquor Licensing Office which processes Liquor license applications and renewals. In addition, we draw up the provincial budget for all the departments and stimulate economic development through our agencies.
