The Gauteng Department of the Economic Development has at least six entities that report to the MEC for Finance and Economic Affairs and are considered to be the implementation arms of the DED.
They are guided by the development plans of the province such as the Gauteng Provincial Growth and Development strategy.
The Gauteng provincial agencies cover a range of types of initiatives that are part of local and regional economic development activity including:
- Marketing of the province for investment and tourism
- Small business support
- Flagship development projects
- Sector focused development initiatives
- Cross-cutting initiatives such as broad-based black economic empowerment
Gauteng Economic Development Agency (GEDA)
The Gauteng Provincial Government established GEDA as the Province’s trade and investment promotion agency, with the aim of increasing the overall economic growth of the Province. The mandate of GEDA is described as:
- Trade and Investment Promotion
- Targeted Economic Research
- Economic Development
- Global City Region- positioning and branding
- Investment in strategic economic infrastructure.

Gauteng Enterprise Propeller
GEP, the Small, Medium, Micro Enterprises (SMME) support agency replaced GAUMAC, which was a manufacturing-focused SMME support agency on the understanding that SMMEs in all economic sectors need the same levels of support including financial support. GEP was established on the premise that SMMEs are a key role player in growing the economy and reducing poverty and unemployment. GEP fulfills its mandate through six strategic priorities:
- Provision of efficient and timely financial support to entrepreneurs towards facilitating their development;
- Provision of efficient and timely business development support to entrepreneurs towards increasing their professionalism and sustainability;
- Contribute to the creation of an enabling environment for SMMEs growth and sustainability;
- Identify business opportunities and enhance business facilitation and business partnerships for, and between SMMEs;
- Facilitate increased SMME participation, including of women, youth and people with disabilities, in the Province’s economic growth sectors
- GPG’s priority socio-economic development projects; and ensure effective and efficient management of GEP.

Gauteng Tourism Authority (GTA)
The Gauteng Tourism Authority (GTA) was established to develop, promote, coordinate and facilitate responsible and sustainable tourism in the province. GTA’s vision is to be the strategic leader in tourism in the province. In addition it wants to create Gauteng as a world-class destination that attracts business visitors and all other tourists to the Province in order to contribute to economic growth.

Gauteng Film Commission
The mandate of the Gauteng Film Commission (GFC) is the development and promotion of the audiovisual industries in Gauteng. Flowing from this mandate, the GFC’s core business is to facilitate and enhance the contribution of the industry to the economic growth of the province and to promote Gauteng as a film production hub of choice or destination.
Support and development provided to the sector by GFC includes:
- Sponsoring training sessions
- Taking film to the townships
- Giving grants to young producers

Blue IQ
Blue IQ was designed to unlock the growth potential of four key sectors in order to contribute to the province in a meaningful way. These four growth sectors are: Business Tourism; High value-added Manufacturing; Logistics and Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
There are six projects that Blue IQ Investment Holdings is currently helping to further develop to commercial maturity.

- Blue Catalyst

Gauteng Gambling Board (GGB)
The GGB is a statutory body with a mission: “to create and maintain a viable, fair and respectable gambling industry for all who have an interest in, or are affected by gambling in Gauteng by licensing and controlling, as well as advising government, making use of competent people and appropriate resources”. In short, the Board has two primary functions:
- To regulate the industry
- Collection of revenue generated by the industry.
