The Northern Cape Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development is currently seeking to broaden the ownership of the province’s agricultural businesses as well as keenly promoting the region for further investment.

There are countless agriculture investment opportunities available in the Northern Cape, a selection of which can be viewed at:

However, while Agriculture has always been a crucial part of the Northern Cape economy, the rearing and production of livestock is also rapidly increasing in importance.

Aside from the growing of traditional crops and other newer agricultural exports for international markets, the province is also ideally suited to rearing livestock.

The province’s vegetation is comprised of Savanna, Desert Grassland, Shrub Bushveld, Karoo and Karoid Shrubland, Fynbos and Succulent Karoo, which is perfect fodder for livestock.

  • Produce high quality meat
  • Production optimised i.t.o. animal population
  • 7,7 million sheep (27% of national flock)
  • 522 000 goats (7.4% of national herd)
  • 492 000 cattle (3.5% of national herd)
  • 5 700 tons of greasy wool produced in the south east part of the Province
  • Game farming a growing and high potential industry

Export Readiness

The Northern Cape Province currently boasts three EU-registered establishments covering all livestock species except beef:

  • Oryx abattoir which slaughters ostriches and processed game meat
  • Gariep Organic meat abattoir in Strydenburg which produces the same meat as Oryx but also includes sheep
  • LAW abattoir in Globershoop which slaughters only sheep/goats and is the only abattoir listed with the EU for exporting lamb and goat meat.
