The Vhembe Region is named after the majestic mountain range that embraces the area. It is home to many great baobab trees, as well as other flora and fauna. The region is redolent in history, with the heritage of the San, Arabs and ancient African Kingdoms intersecting here - the crowning point being the fortresses at Mapungubwe and Thulamela. The site at Mapungubwe was the capital of a pre-colonial Southern African state, and the source of many fascinating artefacts, including the famous Golden Rhino.
The rural settlement of Mhinga is found in this region and is near to the town of Makhado (formerly Louis Trichardt). It is situated in the foothills of the Soutpansberg and is a highly fertile area, with a variety of tropical fruits grown in the region. The area is characterised by tranquil bushland and rich birdlife, with occasional cattle grazing. It offers peace of mind under the African sky, with an abundance of rich African tradition.
Wisani Lodge
The lodge is situated 20 minutes from the Punda Maria gate of the Kruger National Park, in Mhinga.
Project description
There is presently a bar, swimming pool, reception area, and six chalets at the lodge, all in need of renovation. The project requires 14 additional chalets and an upgrade of the existing developments and road.
This is a community-owned project that is strategically located on the high-volume tourist route to Kruger National Park.
The growth of the tourism industry has translated into increased visitor numbers to the Kruger National Park, which currently suffers from a lack of accommodation in the area. The lodge will remedy this, while at the same time empowering previously disadvantaged individuals in the adjacent communities.
Approximate value
R10-million
Feasibility projections
A master plan has been developed, including an EIA report.
