The Northern Cape presents an established economic environment built on mining, agriculture and manufacturing, but within these sectors, investment opportunities have emerged in niche sub-sectors catering to new and exciting markets locally and internationally.
Agriculture and agro-processing
Opportunities exist in the Northern Cape for investment to expand the agro-processing, wine-making and dried vine fruit industries and the development of grapes supporting industries such as packaging plants. Kimberley farmers alone use around 12-million cartons and 10-million fibre bags annually, and the establishment of factories to produce these items offers profitable possibilities for investors.

Mining
The exceptional mineral wealth
of the Northern Cape has ensured the importance - nationally and internationally - of the province's mining industry. Mining accounts for a major proportion of South Africa's export production of certain minerals and metals and has been a mainstay of the Northern Cape economy for over a century. Today, it remains the single most important economic sector of the province, driving the economy, creating wealth and providing employment for the people of the province. Major mining giants Samancor, Iscor, Goldfields, PPC Lime, Alpha Assmang and Anglo American operate within the Northern Cape.
Mining operations in the province include:
- Diamonds
- Copper
- Lead
- Zinc
- Iron
- Manganese

Manufacturing
The manufacturing sector in the Northern Cape is dominated by the food and beverage industry in Upington and by the food and beverage, clothing, textiles and metals industries in Kimberley. More recently, however, a noticeable trend within the manufacturing sector has been the development of small and medium manufacturing concerns producing goods for domestic and international niche markets.
Some of the niche sectors emerging include:
- Furniture
- Jewellery
- Water bottling
- Algae production
- Meat and leather processing
- Surgical gut production
- Packaging of fresh produce

Aquaculture
South Africa's western coastal shelf is one of the richest marine ecosystems
in the world. Much of this shelf is in Northern Cape waters and the province is already an extremely profitable area for fishing and aqua-culture. The waters around Port Nolloth, the Northern Cape's principal port, are unpolluted, nutrient-rich and abundant with marine life. Enormous potential exists in long-line hake fishing from Port Nolloth, as an example, as well as the development of aqua- and mariculture on the coast.
Investment opportunities exist in the following areas:
- Hake
- Oysters
- Abalone
- Freshwater ornamental fish
- Marine food fish
- Seaweed
