South Africa
Sector
ICT - Information & Communication Technology
The Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality is a prosperous and dynamic region located in the North West province, offering investors a host of potential opportunities.
Quality of life in the municipality is amongst the best that South Africa has to offer, which is reflected in its high average incomes, extensive access to basic infrastructure, world-class medical and educational facilities and relatively low rate of serious crimes.
With its excellent location, healthy climate and access to the largest markets in Africa, the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality is an ideal location for business.
The region includes a number of important and business-friendly local municipalities including Klerksdorp, Potchefstroom and Ventersdorp.
While there is vast investment potential across the region, the municipality has already identified specific opportunities in a number of sectors including ICT, Pharmaceuticals, Agriculture, Environmentally-friendly Technologies, Tourism and Manufacturing.
Contact Dr Monty Mongake on mongake@sdm.org.za for more information on any of these opportunities.
Below are a selection of opportunities currently on offer in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality:
- Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
The ICT sector is full of potential and the City of Potchefstroom has declared its objective to be Africa’s first Cyber City by 2010. Partnerships with the local university offer excellent scope for research and development in the sector as well as offering ICT services to the whole African continent.
- Pharmaceuticals
The pharmaceutical sector is earmarked for rapid growth. The pharmaceutical research and training facility at the Potchefstroom University is unique in the north of South Africa, and is already a World Health Organisation-accredited testing facility.
- Manufacturing
Manufacturing is an important sector as the region has a growing food-processing industry, with significant expansion potential. The district is in the agricultural heartland of South Africa and at the cutting-edge of agricultural R&D and technological innovation in agriculture. Furthermore, the local university is owner of a large and growing number of patents that the university is eager to commercialise.
- Tourism
The tourism sector offers high growth potential, particularly ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup and there are opportunities in sports, education and cultural tourism. The region is ideally situated next to the Vredefort Dome (200-million year old impact crater), close to the Cradle of Man World Heritage Site and close to the largest gold mines in the world.
The N12 route from Johannesburg to Cape Town and Namibia runs through Potchefstroom and has recently been declared a Spatial Development Initiative (SDI) – the so-called 'Treasure Route'.
