Mafikeng, in the North West province, is currently embarking on a major project to regenerate the region with plans for an industrial development zone.

As part of the Mafikeng Industrial Development Zone (MIDZ) project, a massive and modern road network and infrastructure development programme is already underway and a chief executive officer, Mr Tebogo Kebotlhale, has been appointed to oversee the development.

Key investment opportunity areas identified in Mafikeng are:

  • Mining
  • Mineral Beneficiation
  • Biofuels
  • Bulk Water
  • Bulk Electricity
  • Bulk Sewer projects
  • Manufacturing
  • Agriculture and
  • Cargo in and around the SADC region

Comments by Mr Tebogo Kebotlhale, CEO of Mafikeng IDZ:

“The Mafikeng Industrial Development Zone is a microcosm of industrial development in the area, and certainly one could argue it is a microcosm for industrial development in the province.

We see the MIDZ as the launch pad through which we can then begin to industrialise the district.

With the projects associated with the MIDZ there are going to be economic, social and other ramifications for the local inhabitants, in particular for the Mafikeng Local Municipality.

You would need to put in plans which allowed the economic direction of the city, you would need to put in place your integrated transport development plans to accommodate the growing city, which comes as a result of those projects that would be undertaken by the MIDZ.

There are arguments already at this point in time that Mafikeng is a growing African city, and there are semblances of Mafikeng becoming a cosmopolitan city, five or 10 years down the line.

What we need to put in place is the infrastructure and the social amenities that would enable us to see Mafikeng become a cosmopolitan area in the next five or 10 years.”
