The Maloti Drakensburg Transfrontier Conservation Area (TFCA) straddles the borders of both South Africa and Lesotho and includes the Maloti and Drakensberg Mountain ranges.

There are a number of national parks included in the Maloti Drakensburg TFCA, among them the Sehlabathebe National Park in Lesotho.

The Lesotho Tourism Development Corporation (LTDC) is currently looking to establish various facilities within the Sehlabathebe National Park including a mountain park resort, an environmental centre and a luxury lodge.

The Sehlabathebe National Park is home to a number of unique tourism attractions including among others:

  • San rock art sites and other historical sites
  • Hiking and rock climbing possibilities
  • Trout fishing
  • Pony trekking to the Tsoelikane Falls
  • Off-road activities.

The LTDC is aiming to create benefits for the country’s national tourism industry and more specifically for the communities living around the park through the provision of a sustainable tourism product.

To achieve this, the LTDC is looking for partners to operate one or more of the following business opportunities:

  • A National Park Mountain Resort facility needs to be constructed with the capacity for between 10 to 20 units, equivalent to between 20 to 40 beds.
  • Provision of nature based activities ranging from hiking, mountain bike trails, trout fishing pony trails and others in close cooperation with community residents as owners of the activity concession right.
  • Management of an existing Heritage Centre.

The Sehlabathebe Mountain Resort will be situated in the north eastern part of the park on a high plateau with northern views of the higher Maloti mountain peaks.  Accessibility to the resort will be via vehicle from Lesotho and by pony trail from Bushman’s neck.

Successful entrepreneurs/companies will have a proven track record in operating tourism ventures in rural areas and/or establish client base that fits the profile of potential visitors to the park.

Previous proven experience in the co-management of protected areas as well as private sector-community partnerships is a definite advantage.
