MIDZ's three new focus areas

The North West province has identified for itself a future niche in manufacturing, agri-processing, mineral beneficiation, trade facilitation, tourism and the transport sector. This is due to its well established industrial capacity at major development nodes such as Rosslyn and Rustenburg, access to resources and strategic central location in southern Africa, namely in the middle of the
Maputo-to-Walvis Bay Coast-to-Coast Platinum spatial development initiative (SDI), as well as on the main South-to-North Corridor (Western Frontier Corridor) from Kimberly to Taung to Vryburg to Mafikeng to Lobatse via Botswana to the central markets of the Southern African Development Community (SADC). The unique theming conceptualised for the IDZ at Mafikeng focuses on three strategic sectors.

First focus area

Promoting the IDZ as a manufacturing hub for electronic components, wireless tracking and tracing equipment systems and services for South African and southern African markets constitutes the first focus area. The downstream manufacturing and associated distribution rights compromise the following sub-sectors within the information, communications and technology (ICT) sector.

  • Electronic and digital products: DVDs, high-density tapes, disk, computer chips, etc
  • Telecommunications: hardware and software
  • Electronics maps: hardware and software for real-time routing, scheduling and monitoring
  • Electronic data interchange: systems for paperless transactions and e-commerce
  • Electronic order board consolidation and bulk buying for SMMEs in mining and wholesaling for export transactions.

Second focus area

The second focus area is to promote the establishment of a mineral beneficiation part within the IDZ at Mafikeng. The mineral beneficiation programme targets the following manufacturing, wholesaling and retailing sectors:

  • Cutting and polishing of precious and semi-precious stones
  • Manufacturing of platinum jewellery
  • Manufacturing of gold jewellery
  • Cutting and polishing of granite and marble
  • Wholesale retail selling of precious and semi-precious stones
  • Skills development.

Third focus area

Promoting the processing and refinement of agricultural products such as meat processing and packaging of vegetable oils, including the promotion, production and use of bio-energy (alternative fuels) is the third focus area. The geographic spread, sectoral and market linkages of the strategic sectors of manufacturing, mining and agriculture are the main considerations and drivers in support of the investment theme and manufacturing silos to be promoted within the industrial park at Mafikeng in the North West.

Progress on MIDZ Phase One projects

In preparation for the establishment of an industrial park adjacent to Mafikeng Airport, which the Cabinet in 2008 conferred an international licence. The MIDZ has registered considerable progress in implementing some of its projects, and the following is progress on phase 1:

  • Bulk sewer: completed – R15.2 million project
  • Bulk water: completed – R22.6 million project
  • Bulk electricity: 85% complete – R17.2 million project
  • Internal services: 85% complete – R48.9 million project. After completion, 23 fully serviced industrial ervens will be ready for occupation by industrialists. There is a clear commitment by the MIDZ to place Mafikeng on the podium of industrialisation. It is also the MIDZ’s objective to catapult the economic growth of the Mafikeng Local Municipality, Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality and that of the North West province to a new level.
  • Town planning, EIA, Occupational Health and Safety are ongoing – R1.06 million worth
    of activities.
  • Funding is required for the Northern Access Road – estimated at R72.5 million.
