The Lubombo TFCA, which borders Swaziland, southern Mozambique and KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa, consists of five separate transfrontier conservation areas linked by the Lubombo Mountains. They include Usuthu-Tembe Futi, Songimvelo-Malolotja, Nsubane-Pongola, Lubombo Conservancy and Goba.

The conservancy is unique in that it combines national, private and community-owned reserves that have come together in a coordinated effort to ensure that there is proper and sustainable conservation of ecosystems, which also enhances the quality of life of people in this region. It nurtures the values intrinsic to the Swazi nation, playing host to the annual “butimba” hunting event, led by His Majesty King Mswati III. It offers a variety of accommodation options for visitors and is situated on the eastern route between the Kruger National Park and KwaZulu-Natal.

The Swaziland Lubombo Conservancy is the site of four investment opportunity projects, namely:

Investment opportunity: Magadzavane Complex

This newly built complex is set on the Lubombo mountain range in the Mlawula Nature Reserve. It includes thatched lodges (sleeping 36), a swimming pool and conference facilities. Activities in the complex include game viewing, bird watching, hiking and camping. The complex is owned by the Swaziland National Trust Commission (SNTC) and they have opened up the facility for potential investment in the management and running of the complex, with the possibility of refurbishment and upgrading.

Investment opportunity: Mlawula Tented Camp

This tented campsite consists of eight units accommodating 16 beds. It is situated in the Mlawula Nature Reserve and has significant development potential. A concession for the campsite establishment in the reserve is to be made available for investment. The terms and conditions of this concession will need to be negotiated with the SNTC, which is the authority mandated to proclaim and manage protected areas in Swaziland.

Investment opportunity: Mapelepele Cottage

There is an existing cottage in the Mlawula Nature Reserve offering 4 beds, which is available as an upgrading investment opportunity. A concession for this cottage is in place and will be made available for investment. The terms and conditions of this concession will need to be negotiated with the SNTC.

Investment opportunity: Mhlumeni Campsite

A concession for the development of a high-quality campsite and a potential lodge development is available. The concession is to be offered by the Swaziland Government on behalf of the Mhlumeni community. The terms and conditions of this concession will need to be negotiated with the SNTC in conjunction with the Swaziland Investment Promotion Authority (SIPA).
