The East London IDZ brings together in one place everything that investors, manufacturers and contractors need to be successful in an increasingly competitive economic environment. The IDZ has ample physical space, has its own power and water supply and is conveniently located near the Port of East London; just some of the reasons that investors have flocked to, and are finding success in, East London.
The Automotive Supplier Park (ASP) at ELIDZ is the flagship of the Eastern Cape automotive sector. The province is home to over 180 component suppliers, and the ASP is fast becoming the place for the best of them to be. Features of the ASP include a consolidated factory layout design, centralised logistics services, state-of-the-art ICT and shared staff services. Over 30 opportunities have been identified and include, amongst others, immobilisers, fuel injectors, light and instrument clusters, satellite tracking mechanisms, acoustic systems, plastic mouldings and paintings, door trim panels and centre consoles.

Opportunities at the IDZ are not limited to the industrial sectors. The zone also presents competitive advantages for the establishment of call centres servicing both local and international clients. South Africa is recognised as an attractive call centre destination for various well-documented reasons, and East London is a particularly attractive location for the sector.

The Eastern Cape, by virtue of its status as South Africa's undisputed automotive hub, provides unparalleled opportunities for electronics manufacturers. Opportunities exist especially in automotive electronics, consumer electronics, hardware, machine tools, motor relays and pre-payment metering and electrical machinery for household and industrial use.

ICT is one of the targeted growth sectors in South Africa, and already there has been significant investment from global giants such as Siemens, Alcatel, SBC Communications, Telecom Malaysia and Vodafone. Investment opportunities lie specifically in the development of access control systems and security equipment, automotive electronic subsystems, systems and software development in the banking and financial services sector, silicon processing for fibre optics, integrated circuits and solar cells. There are also significant opportunities for the export of hardware and associated services as well as software and peripherals.

The Eastern Cape is one of only two provinces in South Africa that have been identified as having the capacity for afforestation. The ELIDZ agro-processing cluster offers a distinct advantage to companies in the business of timber processing. The location of the cluster is in close proximity to extensive forestry and therefore an abundant availability of raw material supplies. Another competitive advantage is the strategic government-supported timber project at the IDZ.

East London’s location on the eastern seaboard of the South African coastline offers opportunities for the development of a vibrant marine aquaculture cluster. The area earmarked for the marine aquaculture cluster at the IDZ is less than 100 metres from the shore, and already has investors. Access to good quality sea water and seclusion from bathing beaches ensures high levels of bio-security.
