Project description/concept
The province wishes to establish a jewellery factory in Polokwane. The main aim is to maximise the provincial mining output of platinum, diamonds, gold and some of the gemstones. The province
currently hosts eight platinum mines, three diamond mines, one gold mine and a number of small operations of gemstones . There is a good chance that about ten additional mines of platinum and gold will be opening in the next ten years. The plan is to secure a small percentage (2%) of the current production and dedicate it to this manufacturing initiative. The jewellery to be produced will be used as corporate gifts, chains, watches and sought-after costume pieces.
The Market
The target is that 70% of production will be dedicated to the international market and the balance for the domestic market. South Africa is expecting international jewellery designers to bring international contracts for local manufacturers.
Project Model
The project is earmarked to be in line with those operated by Vukani Ubuntu in South Africa. The building model will cost in the region of US $20 million. The hub will consist of a jewellery
manufacturing factory to be operated by the private sector, a training facility to be operated and sponsored by the Government and an SMME incubation centre, which will be a section 21 company, sponsored by the private sector. This hub will be private-public partnership initiative.
