Essential oils

uThungulu has established a viable essential oils programme and is looking for investment to roll the project out in various local municipalities and regions. Researched forecasts are that a R2-million investment will yield financial returns from the first year and pay itself back in profit after five. uThungulu’s diverse climate and unique flora provide opportunities for new crop development and agriculture diversification.

Sports stadium

The uMhlathuze multi-purpose sports stadium project will include a soccer stadium, a separate synthetic athletics track, indoor sports facilities, change rooms and offices, and will revitalise sports and commercial development in the region. uThungulu DM has managed to secure funding to the value of R30-million already from various provincial government departments, and other public bodies, but the majority of the required investment amount is still sought. A comprehensive business plan for the project has been devised by the uThungulu District Muncipality and can be requested directly.

Cultural tourism

The KwaBulawayo Tourism Development project was identified as a means for uplifting the local communities in the culturally rich Umlalazi region of the uThungulu District Municipality. The region is home to King Shaka's KwaBulawayo Military Capital, and is recognised as being one of the key sites of Zulu heritage. The estimated total project cost is R18.5-million over the two-phase planned process. The R8.5-million required for Phase 1 has been obtained through various public contributions. R10-million is required for a cultural Zulu and King Shaka museum, a multimedia interpretive centre, a traditional restaurant and bar facilties, and a traditional hutted accommodation complex.
