The Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality has identified key sectors to help advance the local economy, both for and by the people of the communities. The following are four projects that have either shown great potential or have already been successful in building the communities from a commercial and social perspective. These projects have shown themselves to be outstanding tools for social growth as well as sound business initiatives with good returns on real investment.

Pharmaceutical and ICT offer investors key to success in North West

Pharmaceuticals: The pharmaceutical sector in the North West is earmarked for rapid growth. The pharmaceutical research and training facility at the Potchefstroom University is unique in the north of South Africa, and is already a World Health Organisation-accredited testing facility.

Information and Communication Technology (ICT): The ICT sector is likewise full of potential and the City of Potchefstroom has declared as its objective to be Africa’s first Cyber City by 2010. Partnerships with the local university offer excellent scope for research and development (R&D) in the sector and offering IT services to the whole African continent.

Invest in piggery project: Opportunities in the North West

Rebokamoso Piggery Project was established in 2004 by the unemployed women of Boikhutso Village. The project was implemented on land donated by the village, and continues to be a fruitful enterprise today. Lack of funding however has meant that the project lacks the capacity to grow. The women have managed to maintain a level of sustainability over the course of four long years, but without the capacity for growth, the project, like the pigs, has its days numbered.

Treasure Route aims for new tourist attraction

The Tlokwe N12 Cultural Village Project involves the construction of a multi-cultural village along the N12 Treasure Route. The village will include first-class facilities such as an administration block, conference centre, training centre, arts and crafts centre, amphitheatre, guard room, library and museum, curio shops, restaurant, bar, lodges, chalets, boma, ablution facilities, lapa, and will be fully and securely fenced off. A full business plan is available from the municipality.
