The Limpopo Provincial government is planning to establish a producers’ oriented fresh produce assembly facility in the province.  The facility will serve as a direct link between the farmers and the general fresh produce trade.

This fresh produce market could potentially be a “one-stop shop” with a wholesale market, cold storage and ripening facilities and even a food preparation, packaging and distribution component.

The facility will primarily focus on the needs of the black emerging farmers but will accommodate produce from commercial farmers as well.  This will ensure that the farmers’ earnings from production increases through the minimization of the participation of “middle men”.

The provincial government believes that construction of a facility of this nature will serve as an incentive for the emerging black farmers to start producing fresh produce to supply to various market segments.

The total project cost is estimated to be approximately R375 million.
