Agriculture has long been a cornerstone of the regional economy, but the municipality is looking to expand on the existing strength that it enjoys, particularly in the field of viniculture.
The municipality is investigating opportunities to add value to the sector through the implementation of bottling and canning processes for locally produced agricultural products, such as the region’s wine. Processing, bottling, canning and packaging are all activities that would allow the region to keep economic benefit local rather than simply move the raw product away from the region at the first chance.
Though the Matzikama region has an established agriculture sector, the municipality is also exploring niche products that could add value to the industry, specifically by bringing previously disadvantaged individuals into the formal economy through joint-ventures and co-operatives. Examples of niche products under consideration include the extraction of oil from grape seed, and the production of medicinal plants such as hoodia and buchu.
The region offers an environment that is conducive to the growing of these products, and with the established infrastructure in place already, the economies of scale on production, processing and packaging offer a competitive advantage to investors looking to set up operations on the west coast.
