Swartland Municipality is a regular award-winner, and for good reason. The municipality is recognised for its local economic development strategies, which have seen the quiet west coast region expand its areas of opportunity in line with the urban explosion to the south in the City of Cape Town; all the time maintaining the traditional charm and feel of the west coast region.
The Swartland, known as the bread-basket of the Western Cape, mainly for its wheat production has seen growth outside of the established agriculture industry recently due in the main to the expansion of the City of Cape Town. The city's northerly neighbour is well-positioned to accommodate any surplus development and production requirements that Cape Town may not be able to cater for. This readiness has already seen infrastructural development through the erection of various residential complexes and the development of leisure activities such as golf courses and estates.
When compared to the metropolitan centre of Cape Town, Swartland is slightly less bustling for sure, but the municipality is still able to offer everything prospective investors are looking for in terms of capacity, transport and services, but with a certain charm that others have found unique to the west coast. Not only residential developments, but industrial developments as well are relocating to the Swartland, and the municipality is making the most of the construction work that this migration is bringing to the region.
Swartland Local Municipality was recently named the best local municipality in the Western Cape, and in fact went on to receive the nationally awarded Vuna Award for best local municipality in the country in December 2007. The award reflects the excellent level of service delivery and community commitment that the municipality has exhibited over the course of the past year, and also the potential that it exhibits and is committed to acting on for years to come.
