Summary:

Not only was the West Coast District Municipality named as best district municipality in the Western Cape in 2007, but two of its local municipalities also featured in the top three in their category when the Vuna Awards were announced in November and December.

Swartland Local Municipality won the Vuna Award for best local municipality in the province while Matzikama Local Municipality placed third in the same category. Swartland then went on to also claim the national Vuna Award for best local municipality in South Africa.
These awards simply illustrate the hard work that goes on on a day-to-day basis at the district and its various local municipalities. While it is nice to be recognised with awards such as these, the real reward comes in the form of a satisfied population, a thriving economy and an attractive place to live. All of these things also make the region an attractive place to invest and do business, and with various opportunities identified in the region, the West Coast is doing all that it can to assure investors.

About the West Coast
The West Coast region is situated along the Atlantic Ocean and borders on the Cape Metropole in the south. The Cederberg mountains form the boundary in the east and the region borders on the North Western Cape in the north. The region covers a total of 31 099sqkm.

The district comprises five municipalities and a District Management Area (DMA). The five municipalities are:
• Swartland Municipality
• Bergrivier Municipality
• Matzikama Municipality
• Cederberg Municipality
• Saldanha Bay Municipality

• Throughout the five municipalities that make up the West Coast District, there have been identified a number of key growth sectors. These include:
• Agriculture - primarily wheat, canola, oranges and export-ready vegetables 
• Fishing - including deep-sea fishing, line fishing, mariculture and a growing aquaculture sector 
• Mining - a very involved processing and transport sector supports the needs of South Africa's mining industry 
• Oil and gas - the Port at Saldanha Bay plays a crucial role in the burgeoning West Africa oil and gas industry 
• Tourism - a unique cultural experience on ruggedly beautiful stretch of South African coastline 
• Trade - proximity to the City of Cape Town makes trade on a large scale a possibility 
• Construction - residential and industrial developments are booming as Cape Town expands further north
