The Waterberg District Municipality (WDM) has the responsibility to provide a strategic framework for economic development to take place and this objective is congruent to local economic development strategy.
Waterberg District has, together with all its strategic partners, embarked on development that will improve the quality of life for its residents.
Hereunder follow some of the initiatives that will contribute to the development Waterberg District. WDM invites potential investors to make use of the opportunities in our magnificent District of Waterberg:
- Provincial ICT hub, the Mogalakwena I-Community Project. The success of this project has led to a rollout plan to other districts in the province.
- Eskom is investing over R26-billion for the construction of the world’s biggest dry-cooled Medupi power station at Lephalale.
- Expansion of capital projects at Potgietersrus Platinum Mine (PPL) in Mokopane, to the value of R4.2-billion.
- Exxaro Grootgeluk Coal Mine expansion in Lephalale.
- Sasol is investigating the liquification of coal resources in Lephalale.
- Nylsvlei and Rust de Winter as agri-tourism destinations.
Opportunities in the Waterberg’s Lephalale Municipality:
The Lephalale Municipality is defined by the agricultural activities along the three rivers in the area:
- Moloko River as the western boundary, which includes the town of Lephalale.
- The Limpopo River as the northern boundary.
- The Phalala River as the eastern boundary, which includes the 41 villages of the Phalala community.

The following six integrated Godisa Projects make up the Lephalale Agricultural Corridor Economic Development Project:
1. Godisa Export Grape Research and Marketing Intelligence to improve the competitiveness of the Lephalale grape industry – research project (active).
2. The Phalala Community Economic Development Action Plan – research project (active).
3. The implementation of the Godisa Agri-Business Centre and Processing Plant.
4. The setting up and implementation of the Lemagararo Cooperative and associated facilities.
5. The implementation of the Phalala Community Economic Development Plan.
6. The research into setting up an Eco-Tourism Herero’s Cultural Trail.
These Godisa Projects will result in eight integrated components being created which will form the Lephalale Agricultural Corridor Agri-business Cluster. The project will extend the 1,350 jobs of the seasonal workers in the export grape industry from two months a year to 12 months. The value of the project is R23,069,020.
Waterberg District Municipality is co-funding the Lephalale Agricultural Corridor with EU (LED) Limpopo.
