Port St Johns Beach Development
Port St Johns remains a favourite destination for those wanting to truly get away from it all. Awesome scenery along the Umzimvubu River, wildlife experiences at Silaka and Hluleka Nature
Reserves, ocean adventures in canoes and boats and entertainment such as African dancing, drumming and jazz are all part of the unique appeal of this area.
Location:
Second Beach is a vibrant and popular destination in Port St Johns.
Project description:
The Beachfront requires additional parking, a trading area, more ablution facilities, a lifesaver’s “house” and lighting in order to utilise the facility at night. Commercial retail and hospitality opportunities exist within the site upgrade.
The project seeks to promote rehabilitation and development of beaches to enhance tourism in Port St Johns. It will maximise employment creation in the area as a form of poverty alleviation.
Value:
R33 million
Feasibility/financial projections:
A feasibility study for the Waterfront development has been concluded. The Department of Roads and Transport has committed to upgrading the access to Second beach and a business plan for this has been completed. The Department of Tourism has committed R11 million for the development of Umzimvubu Riverfront and a service provider has been appointed. A CBD Port St Johns Master Plan is being developed which identifies tourism corridors in the area and an EIA is underway.
