Invest North West, the trade and investment promotion agency for the North West province, has opportunities in a range of diverse sectors from agriculture and tourism to science parks and mining.

Below, is a selection of some of the investment opportunities being promoted in the North West over the last year.

Beef beneficiation in North West taking stock

This meat processing plant and feedlot development project is a partnership between South African livestock producers, a black economic empowerment consortium and German technology partners. Total investment sought in the project is R900-million.

The plant intends handling 1 000 cattle and 500 pigs per day for slaughtering and is expected to fill a gap in the meat industry. Eighty percent of the output will be for export. There are five plants within the one project and will include, among other things, an abattoir.

Goat meat production

South Africa has over six-million goats that are owned by two distinct sectors, the commercial farmers and the small-scale, non-commecialised farmers. Commercial farmers keep Angora goats for mohair production and meat production. Non-commercial farmers use an informal marketing system, which is characteristic of developing economies.

Through Invest North West facilitation, a 2 000ha farm has been acquired by five black farmers for goat production. Negotiations for off-take agreements are currently underway between the farm and companies in the Middle East and the Indian Ocean Islands.

The North West Science Park

The North West province is keeping up with the global trend of developing science parks. These have been successfully used worldwide as a vehicle to create and promote regional innovation systems. Regional hubs have been shown to stimulate the regional economy by transferring new technologies to existing and new businesses, resulting in growth and job creation.

The establishment of such a science park close to North West University will not only make a significant contribution to Potchefstroom’s manufacturing sector but also to the long-term competitiveness of the region.

Mining and mineral beneficiation in the North West province

Invest North West is currently facilitating the development of a granite beneficiation project. This project involves the cutting and polishing of granite slabs and tiles for both the local and export market. Since the plant will be situated close to the granite quarries, costs for production will be reduced and local beneficiation will serve to unlock economic growth, employment creation and rural development within the region.

Cement is also an important product of the North West. New investments to mine and process limestone into cement for export have already been concluded for the Mafeking area. This R2.1-billion project, including the plant and the mine, will employ 2 000 people and at full capacity will produce 267 000 tons of ferrochrome annually.

The North West is also seeking to increase its level of diamond beneficiation. The Minerals park project in the Mafeking Industrial Development Zone will be housing, among others, diamond beneficiating operations, including the cutting, polishing and manufacture of diamond jewellery.

Aquaculture in North West

The North West province has linked up with Catfish Supreme to offer an attractive investment opportunity and contribute to the industry’s meaningful progress in South Africa. The project
involves the production of top quality fresh, frozen and smoked catfish products, as well as reclaimed fish meat, for export to Japan. Smaller amounts will be sold through local supermarkets to develop the local market.

The total cost of the project, which will produce approximately 1 000 tons of live catfish, will depend on the size of the units built. The total investment has been tabled at between R27-million and R40-million, with the condition that company members contribute 15%, with the
remainder being financed.
