Investors are urged to consider the potential of the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality, in the North West province, which has numerous opportunities in sectors such as agriculture, floriculture, tourism and ICT.
The municipality already has a large mining sector, and has been working to diversify the local economy by promoting new projects. Below are a selection of opportunities currently available in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality.
Building the local economy: Pharma and ICT opportunities in the North West
The pharmaceutical sector in the North West is earmarked for rapid growth. The pharmaceutical research and training facility at the Potchefstroom University is unique in the north of South Africa, and is already a World Health Organisation-accredited testing facility.
The ICT sector is likewise full of potential and the City of Potchefstroom has declared as its objective to be Africa’s first Cyber City by 2010. Partnerships with the local university offer excellent scope for research and development (R&D) in the sector and offering IT services to the whole African continent.

North West blooms with success stories in indigenous flora
Merafong Flora is a 25-hectare community project that was established in 2004. The project is situated roughly 7km from Merafong City Local Municipality in Carletonville, adjacent to the Living Gold Rose Farm.
The project has over 22 different foliage and flowers, and has created 56 permanent and over 141 casual jobs to date, targeting youth - both male and female - within Merafong City Local Municipality.
The project produce is sold through Multi Flora in Johannesburg, the Pretoria Flower Market, Living Gold, as well as other florists around Carletonville and Randfontein.

Invest in piggery project: Opportunities in the North West
The Rebokamoso Piggery Project was established in 2004 by the unemployed women of Boikhutso Village. The project was implemented on land donated by the village, and continues to be a fruitful enterprise today.
Lack of funding however has meant that the project lacks the capacity to grow. The women have managed to maintain a level of sustainability over the course of four long years, but without the capacity for growth, the project, like the pigs, has its days numbered.
Any investment or contribution, both monetary and in terms of equipment, training or mentorship, would go a long way in this community. Small investments of time, money and resources will make a significant impact on the local economy and the lives of the people of Rebokamoso and the surrounding villages.

Cultural Village project offers fresh opportunities in the North West

Investors are invited to participate in the Tlokwe N12 Cultural Village Project, which involves the construction of a multi-cultural village along the N12 Treasure Route, on the edge of the Ikageng Township (next to the entrance of Potchefstroom from Klerksdorp).
The Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality has had the project plan approved by the council and is seeking additional funding and investment to go ahead with the first phase of development.
A full business plan is available from the municipality. Contact Dr Monty Mongake on +27 18 473 8000 or email mongake@sdm.org.za.
