A recent survey of mineral resources in KwaZulu-Natal has revealed economically viable pockets of coal remain within the province’s three traditional coalfields of Utrecht, Vryheid and Klip River, with the latter displaying the highest potential.
This was revealed by Mr Neal Baartjies, of Mintek Mineral and Economic Strategy Unit, at a meeting held to present findings of a study commissioned by Trade & Investment KwaZulu-Natal. The study focused on coal and construction materials.
The other coalfields of Somkele and Nongoma show potential, but await detailed exploration. Coal in the province is of viable quality, but a significant tonnage of high-grade coal currently remains un-mined. Extraction of such coal offers opportunities for small and medium enterprises, particularly black economic enterprises.
A number of construction minerals are in short supply in this province and, accordingly, Mintek is preparing a separate report on minerals such as limestone and clays, as well as indicating the potential for sources of aggregate and sand.
Research has shown that minerals and materials used in the construction industry are available and should be able to meet the province’s needs for construction materials.
In discussing the province’s other minerals, Mr Baartjies noted that although KwaZulu-Natal was home to an array of potentially economically attractive minerals, many are mined less expensively elsewhere in the country. However, given the current boom in commodity prices and the growing demand for resources, many KwaZulu-Natal mineral resources could become economically viable and worth serious consideration.
Mr Gavin Fleming, also of Mintek, demonstrated the Geographic Information System (GIS) which was an essential element of the minerals survey. It showed most existing operations in the province and high-potential localities for the discovery of additional resources, three reports, providing details of the findings have been placed on the Trade & Investment KwaZulu-Natal website and can be downloaded. The GIS is available on request.
