With the 2010 World Cup now just one year away, the country is preparing itself for the biggest sporting event in its history.
Major cities such as Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg have already claimed top city status, as they host World Cup games with their new and revamped stadiums.
Further afield, however, there are many opportunities for smaller cities to capitalise on the event through becoming 2010 base camp sites.
The City of Matlosana has begun aggressively marketing itself as a potential base camp, to be used as a training venue by one of the international teams competing in the competition.
"We have suitable accommodation, tourism activities and proper training facilities to be the base camp of one of the 32 teams. We have a permanent 2010 Legacy Desk consisting of two permanent staff members," says Executive Mayor China Dodovu.
The City of Matlosana held a global investors conference last September that was used to identify a number of potential business opportunities for the city ahead of the 2010 World Cup.
Oppenheimer Stadium opportunity
Matlosana has already begun to look for funding to upgrade and transform its Oppenheimer Stadium, which was originally accepted as one of the thirteen candidate city stadiums.
It is hoped that the revamped Oppenheimer Stadium can be used as a training venue as well as being utilised by PSL, Umvela and Vodacom league games.
