The North West province of South Africa is planning to establish a Mining Supply Park in Rustenburg.

Objective: To establish a supplier park housing companies that supply goods and services to the mines, while offering opportunities for local partnerships and transformation.

Currently, the mining industry sources these resources from outside the province – approximately 185km from the mines. The procurement spend ratio is 80:20, with 80% of the procurement spend (an estimated R140 billion a year) leaving the province.  The objective of the province is to localize at least a portion of this spend by establishing the Mining Supply Park as a platform.

A pre-feasibility study has been conducted on the Mining Supply Park, and results prove that the advantages and possible job creation opportunities through this initiative is huge.

The project will provide suppliers / vendors with a powerful marketing and manufacturing platform, where cost savings and location positioning allow the companies to gain additional business and market share.

This advantage is further enhanced through increased efficiency, improved service and appropriate training facilities within the Mining Supply Park. In turn, the value proposition afforded to the mines by the Mining Supply Park is to enhance their efficiencies in the receipt of procured products, equipment and services with the Mining Supply Park functioning as a logistical, technological and innovation hub.

The development of the Mining Supply Park is being led by mining houses, the Bonjanala District Municipality and the Rustenburg Municipality. It is being coordinated by Invest North West. Planning is well progressed and it is now ready to move into the detailed planning phase.

Opportunities at the Mining Supply Park:

  • Relocation facilities for companies wishing to establish branches in Rustenburg
  • Warehouse development
  • Local manufacturing of goods
  • Delivery of services, including general engineering, drilling, blasting, and materials handling
  • Support facilities including accounting, computing, photo copying, legal and medical training facilities and services
  • Facilities to add value to minerals
  • Venture capital funding for start-up companies
