This opportunity is about creating an attractive tourism route of epic proportions. The route will eventually span three Southern African countries and three South African provinces. As such, it is bound to become one of the most popular destinations for holidaymakers, safari-goers, filmmakers and travel media. However, the focus for now is firmly on the Northern Cape section of the Orange River.
The Northern Cape section of the route covers the Orange River from Lake Gariep and Vanderkloof Dam, South Africa’s largest dams, all the way to the mouth on the Atlantic Ocean at Alexander Bay on the border between South Africa and Namibia. The development target area includes roughly 100km on both sides of the river and stretches over some of the most scenic areas in the province.
The project mission would eventually be the development of the entire Orange River area – from its origin in Lesotho to the mouth on the west coast – as one huge tourism destination. The offering would include the following experiences: historical, wildlife, water-based sport, photographic and many more.
The entire target area in the Northern Cape is divided in six legs, each to be developed as a sub-destination offering its own unique and attractive tourism experience. However, these legs would be strung together to provide a ribbon-like destination drawing the visitor on a journey from the far east to the far west of the continent.
