The aim of the project is to commercialise tuber propagation of Devil's Claw as well as to establish a pharmaceutical processing plant. The herb is effective in the treatment of rheumatism, arthritis, gastrointestinal problems, liver and gall bladder problems, diabetes and hepatitis. The project will have a capacity to produce pharmaceutical products in either liquid, powder or tablet form depending on the requirements of different markets.

The Devil's Claw herb is indigenous to the area and requires no inputs. There is an abundant supply of labour in the area and the harvesting requires a low level of skills. The demand for this product greatly exceeds supply. All levels of government have given support to this project. The Department of Agriculture Conservation and Environment, a strategic partner in this project, will ensure that internationally accepted practices of conservation are adhered to.

The communities of Bophirima and Kgalagadi districts in the North West Province initiated the Devil's Claw project, which has been allocated 40ha of land. Cultivation is already taking place and 7000 seasonal workers are employed throughout the region as harvesters.

Interested parties are invited to contact Invest North West for more information on this project.
