Samp and beans is a staple South African food. A project is underway in Kwazulu-Natal to establish a food-processing plant where samp and beans will be cooked and canned.
The project driver Mogie Naidu, a social worker, was involved in the World Food Programme and developed the idea of the plant. Mrs Naidu applied to Umsobomvu Youth Fund for funding for a business plan for establishment of a canning plant. The business plan and technical drawings for the plant were developed. A pilot plant was established to test feasibility. Project promoters came to see Trade & Investment KwaZulu-Natal (TIKZN) seeking funding and assistance with establishing markets and premises.
The total project cost is R13-million. R3.8-million in funding has been allocated by Gijima. An amount of R1.6-million is to be raised and guarantor of R7-million sourced.
The investor’s role would be in operational management and raising funding for the project.
