Project name: Aluminium Fluoride Production Plant

Brief description: Development of an aluminium fluoride manufacturing plant.

Location: Mbonambi Local Municipality, 170km northeast of Durban, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN)

Project rationale: The development of a plant for aluminum fluoride production is currently being promoted by a private sector concern in uThungulu District of KZN. Overseas funders have been identified for the project and are expected to contribute 40% of capital requirements. The Department of Trade and Industry (the dti) has also indicated interest in the project. Potential exists for a downstream cement manufacturing plant to be developed.

The plant will require substantial supporting infrastructure like road and rail links providing an opportunity for KZN Growth Fund involvement in the project.

Feasibility study status: To be undertaken

Budget: Plant costs are estimated at R300-million – 40% in foreign direct investment (FDI) and 60% from the dti. Additional expenditure of R50-million is sought from the KZN Growth Fund to assist in the development of full feasibility study and for supporting infrastructure costs.

Employment opportunities: To be established

Investor role: Funding of 60% percent of project and operational management
