The Bergrivier Municipality is a municipality traditionally built on agriculture, but steps have been taken to diversify the economy by driving tourism in the region. To this end, the municipality has identified construction and development opportunities for potential investors to consider.

The following investment opportunities exist in the Bergrivier Municipality:

  • Develop a 18 hole golf course in Velddrif. The call for tenders closes on 1 February 2008 and the tender documents are available from the municipality
  • Sport tourism – paragliding development in Porterville. Develop a proper site with first class facilities on the mountain in Porterville
  • West Coast hotel development in Velddrif
  • Tourism development of the Porterville Mountain Resort
  • N7 Gateway shopping mall
  • Provision of middle income housing in Piketberg, Velddrif and Redelinghuys
  • Information and telecommunication technology in the Bergrivier municipal area.

About Bergrivier
Bergrivier is situated just north of Saldanha Bay and Swartland, south of Cederberg and bordering the Atlantic Ocean to the west. The municipal area is 4 407sqkm and estimates are that the population is just short of 50 000 people.

Agriculture remains by far and away the biggest sector in the municipality, delivering mainly on sheep, cattle and grain farming, but also in stud, pig and trout farms, as well as cultivated crops such as fruit, wine grapes, proteas, potatoes, waterblommetjies, vegetables and water melons. Agriculture is also easily the largest employer in the municipality, employing more than half of the working labour force. Most of the municipality's industry is subsidiary to the agriculture sector, with various agroprocessing, packaging and bottling opportunities.
