Not only was the West Coast District Municipality (WCDM) named as best district municipality in the Western Cape recently, but two of its local municipalities also featured in the top three in their category when the Vuna Awards were announced at the end of 2007.

Swartland Local Municipality won  the Vuna Award for best local municipality in the province while Matzikama Local Municipality placed third in the same category. Swartland then went on to claim the national Vuna Award for best local municipality in South Africa.

Throughout the five municpalities that make up the West Coast District, there have been identified a number of key growth sectors. these include:

  • Agriculture – primarily wheat, canola, oranges and export-ready vegetables
  • Fishing – including deep-sea fishing, lin fishing, mariculture and a growing aquaculture sector
  • Mining – a very involved processing and transport sector supports the needs of South Africa's mining industry
  • Oil and gas – the Port at Saldanha Bay plays a crucial role in the burgeoning West Africa oil and gas industry
  • Tourism – a unique cultural experience on ruggedly beautiful stretch of South African coastline
  • Trade – proximity to the City of Cape Town makes trade on a large scale a possibility
  • Construction – residential and industrial developments are booming as Cape Town expands further north
