A boatbuilding academy situated in Khayelitsha is currently training deaf people in the art of boat building. The academy, founded in 2004 by Peter Jacobs from ECB (European Certification Bureau) in the Netherlands, currently has 14 students. The academy has received funding from the Ministry of Social Development to purchase a building factory in Strand, but is still seeking an investor, who is willing to invest between R500 000 and R1-million (for working capital) to kick-start the operation.
