Ya Ditsala Trading Enterprise, a company in Rustenberg, North West, wants to set up catalytic converter production in the town. North West province produces most of the country’s platinum. The project is conceived of one of local beneficiation of mineral resources.

Catalytic converters for vehicles entail the application of a platinum layer before it is ‘canned’ or fitted with stainless steel around the platinum coated ‘brick’. The popularity of catalytic converters is growing as the need to reduce harmful emissions from vehicles grows. The strong and increasing demand is also due to increasing stringent legislation world wide on carbon dioxide emissions.

Nominal production capacity is expected to be 300 000 units and planned annual sales are for 280 000 units, of which half will be exported.

Estimated total costs for the establishment of the project are R330-million.

Forms of collaboration sought are joint venture (equity), market access, buy-back arrangements, management and technical expertise, technology transfer and equipment purchase.

Types of investment or cooperation sought from foreign sources are financial investment, equipment or technology contribution or licence, manufacturing capability, management expertise and marketing expertise or distribution channels.
