South Africa’s new cabinet is to be announced at midday on Sunday May 10, according to a spokesman for the presidency, a day after the inauguration of ANC leader Jacob Zuma.
There has been much speculation in the press over who will have control of the country’s coffers following the election. Trevor Manuel, SA’s finance minister for the last 15 years, is expected to take a different role in the new cabinet.
Some reports have suggested Manuel could be moved to become head of the planning commission tasked with co-ordinating policy implementation.
Several possible candidates have been mooted for the role of finance minister, if Manuel is replaced, including business entrepreneur Cyril Ramaphosa, head of SA’s tax authority Pravin Gordhan and Manuel's current deputy Nhlanhla Nene.
Elsewhere, Helen Zille, has been formally elected as premier of the Western Cape, after the leader of the Democratic Alliance took control of the province from the ANC in the April 22 election.
Zille replaces Lynne Brown, the ANC’s former premier in the province.
In Gauteng, Nomvula Paula Mokonyane has been officially declared the premier of the province, replacing the former premier of Gauteng, Paul Mashatile.
