Jacob Zuma announced his Cabinet for his first term in office this weekend, which saw Trevor Manuel moved out of the Treasury and into a new position while former trade and industry minister Mandisi Mpahlwa has been left out of Cabinet.

Former Finance Minister Trevor Manuel has been named Minister for the Presidency, National Planning Commission, a move widely speculated in the press before the Cabinet was announced.

Former head of South Africa’s Revenue Service (SARS) Pravin Gordhan has been announced as the new Minister of Finance, while Manuel’s deputy, Nhlanhla Nene, remains in the same position.

Kgalema Motlanthe has been sworn in as the Deputy President of South Africa, while former deputy Baleke Mbete has yet to have a role defined for her.

Rob Davies, former Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, replaces his boss Mandisi Mpahlwa as the new Minister of Trade & Industry.

Tokyo Sexwale has been named as the new Minister of Human Settlements, while former Gauteng premier Paul Mashatile has been given a role in Cabinet as the Deputy Minister of Arts & Culture.

Manto Tshabalala-Msimang, the controversial former Minister of Health, has been left out of Cabinet as has former Justice Minister Bridgette Mabandla.

Tshabalala-Msimang’s previous replacement, Barbara Hogan, who has been widely credited for her work in the Ministry of Health in the six months since she took on the role, was moved to the Ministry of Public Enterprises.

The new Minister of Health is the relatively unknown but appropriately qualified Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, who has a Bachelor of Medicine and a Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Natal, and is the former acting Premier of Limpopo.
