About uThungulu District Municipality
The uThungulu District is located in the north-eastern region of the KwaZulu-Natal province of the eastern seaboard of South Africa. It covers an area of 8 200km2, stretching from the agricultural town of Gingindlovu in the south, to the uMfolozi River in the north and inland to the mountainous beauty of rural Nkandla.
The district comprises six local municipalities: Mbonambi, uMhlathuze, Ntambanana, uMlalazi, Mthonjaneni and Nkandla, and has the third highest population in the province after the eThekweni Metro (Durban and surrounds) and the uMgungundlovu District (Pietermaritzburg and surrounds).
Climate
The uThungulu district has a warm climate all year round, with very mild winters and hot, humid summers. There is also a good seasonal rainfall. The temperate climate and warm seas off the coastline make it an ideal location for the development of agricultural projects and tourism
facilities.
Water supply
Phobane Lake, situated on the uMhlathuze River outside Eshowe, is the only major dam in the area. The dam is used to regulate the flow to the lower reaches of the uMhlathuze River in order to meet agricultural irrigation needs for crops such as sugarcane, citrus and cotton. It is also used for industrial and domestic needs. Other major rivers used to supply water to he district include the uMfolozi River on the northern boundary and the Nseleni River.
