ArcelorMittal announced on Thursday that they would invest about €20-million into a continuous production plant in South Africa, to produce energy-efficient construction materials for the local market.
The company hopes to have the capacity to produce around 1,5-million m2/year of polyurethane panels for each shift. There are three shifts in a 24-hour period.
The plant would only use 5 m3/year of water to produce two-million m2 of insulated panels, using around 30 000 tons of steel. The plant would also offer decreased waste generation and energy consumption, reducing its consumption from 3 MW to 0,7 MW.
To reduce its greenhouse gasses, the plant would also immediately implement n-Pentane as a blowing agent.
The panels would be used for low-income housing construction, office buildings, as well as shopping centres.
