Sub-Saharan Africa will need to spend $93-billion per year on infrastructure in order to catch up with the rest of the world and provide the grounding for increased growth. This figure is double what is currently being spent.
One of the single greatest needs is for the development of the power sector and it is estimated by the Infrastructure Consortium for Africa (ICA), who produced the report documenting these statistics, that sub-Saharan Africa needs to build 7000MW of capacity per year to meet the demand of the regions 800-million people.
Another great need was the expansion of the paved roads network, with the region having only one quarter of the developing world’s roads. This resulted in very high costs on transport, with instances of costs being four times as high as other developing countries, for moving one ton of goods, one kilometre.
