Message from the Mayor of the City of Matlosana Mr TS Dodovu

Matlosana, the 'City of People', also known as Klerksdorp, has a large and diverse economy, driven primarily by vibrant mining and agricultural sectors, as well as the burgeoning manufacturing, medical, retail and tourism sectors. The city also boasts the second largest grain co-operative in the world. With our wonderful year-round climate and enviable lifestyle, Matlosana enjoys a competitive advantage in terms of its ability to attract investment and develop export trade. This has ensured the emergence of our province's status as a leading investment destination in international circles and, further, a destination capable of increasing its share of the worldwide investment market.

Matlosana is the second largest city in the North West province, boasting a diverse economy offering numerous trade and investment opportunities to the local and international business community. Matlosana has excellent infrastructure, especially in medical care, as the region is known for its world class service.

Matlosana is best characterised as the global business gateway to the SADC region and sub-Saharan Africa and offers unparalleled hub links to the rest of South Africa via its N12 Treasure Route. This popular route has an abundance of economic potential and is earmarked as an economic corridor and tourist route.

Pleasingly, past economic growth trends in the North West province have compared most favourably with national averages. However, given the competitive advantages the North West province enjoys, and its growing standing, locally and internationally, as an investment destination of choice, I am confident that our province has real potential to increase investor confidence. Essentially, this will have the effect of broadening economic participation, the development of skills, strengthening of the small business sector and ensuring job creation.

Ultimately, as South Africa's next best investment destination, we in the North West seek to stimulate the competitiveness of our local economy further and, in so doing, aim by 2014 to exceed economic growth rates set out in the National Government's Accelerated and Shared Growth Initiative of South Africa (ASGISA). It is our intention to achieve an economic growth rate in the North West of some 7% by 2014.

To this end, I cannot over-emphasise the importance of the Global Investors Conference and Exhibition as an essential marketing tool for not only our own municipal investment strategy, but also for the province's investment promotion agency – INVEST NORTH WEST.

I’m proud of the fact that our city will host the inaugural Global Investors Conference and Exhibition, its speakers, delegates and exhibitors and I believe that it provides a wonderful platform for the widespread and high-profile promotion of the North West Province as a premier business investment destination. I really can’t wait for your participation in this important event.
I am pleased to give the assurance that the City of Matlosana remains unwaveringly committed to the ideal of promoting trade and investment as a vehicle to launch a concerted and sustained attack on poverty, bringing in its wake socio-economic relief to our people.

On behalf of the City of Matlosana, I look forward to welcoming and hosting all participants and delegates to the first Global Investors Conference and Exhibition.

TS Dodovu
Executive Mayor
