Shoppers could soon be filling their trolleys with canned fish from the Karoo, following the news that Eastern Cape company Camdeboo Bream is planning to start farming fish in Cambedoo, near Graaf-Reinet.
Liesl de la Harpe, co-ordinator of the Camdeboo Satellite Aquaculture Project, said the company was aiming to “produce fish in captivity and at high densities.”
The company, which is hoping to establish around 50 fish farms between 2011 and 2015, added that the farms would make use of existing water sources, currently being used to sustain livestock and crops in the desert region.
