The government has launched its new Energy Bill, a legislative effort designed to ensure that South Africa continues to have an uninterrupted supply of electricity.

Minerals and Energy Minister Buyelwa Sonjica said the government is putting into place measures to ensure that a diverse range of affordable energy resources were available to the economy.

The Energy Bill is hoping to guarantee adequate investment in energy infrastructure, while also making plans to hold ‘strategic’ energy feed stocks, following the spate of power outages that hit the country earlier this year.

Sonjica also noted that the government is considering starting an institution that would take responsibility for the promotion and implementation of energy efficient innovations and technologies, which it believes would help to address the skills shortage in the sector.
