Limpopo Economic Development Enterprise (LimDev) is a development enterprise constituted in terms of the Northern Transvaal Development Corporation Act, Act 5 of 1994 (‘the Act’), promulgated on 13 January 1995.

LimDev is listed as a provincial government business enterprise in schedule 3D of the Public Finance Management Act, Act 1 of 1999 (as amended by Act No 29 of 1999).

Corridor Mining Resources (Pty) Ltd
Corridor Mining Resources (Pty) Ltd (CMR), a subsidiary of LimDev, has played a consequential role in the success of ASA Metal’s Dilokong Chrome Mine.

Since its inception in 1997, the mine has gone from strength to strength, contributing extensively to the decrease of unemployment and to poverty alleviation in the Burgersfort area.

The total staff composition in both the mine and the smelters amounts to 1 330 workers, of which 730 are permanent employees and the rest contract. CMR has seen growth of the mine as a symbol of sustainable development and socioeconomic growth.

The company’s executive manager responsible for business development and marketing, Whitey Ras said: ‘Our goal is to see ASA Metals reaching high levels of production, which will ultimately contribute to the Provincial Growth Development Strategy. We have seen improvement in the growth of the mine year after year and we are proud that local communities are benefiting so much from the success of the Dilokong Mine.’

Established from a joint venture between East Asia Metals Investment Company, a subsidiary of Sinosteel, and LimDev, the company has its origins firmly based in the chrome mine in Dilokong.

Realising a growth potential, the mine constructed a ferrochrome plant that produces final product, which is distributed throughout the world. Ferrochrome has its humble beginnings from within the Dilokong Mine, which operates on an incline shaft of approximately 17 degrees with a total length of 1 300 metres.

Upgrading of underground infrastructure has meant that the mine has increased its output during the past 10 months to a total of 38 000 Mt ROM per month. Dilokong produces some of the best foundry grade chrome ore in the world and its products are widely used in the motor manufacturing business. Ras added that the Burgersfort community has benefited by means of strategic partnerships between the public sector and ASA Metals, during and after the construction of the ferrochrome plant.

The company plays a role in the upliftment of the local communities with the objective of improving the quality of life for all.

It is therefore very obvious that the commitment from ASA Metals to its shareholders, staff and business partners has been an example of how humble beginnings can turn into a success story whereby all people involved can benefit.
