Description

Given the unprecedented interest which the United States presidential election has generated, and the fact that the outcome could be particularly important for Africa generally, and southern Africa in particular, we have organised this workshop at the FNB Conference and Training Centre on Tuesday 18 November.

The election takes place on Tuesday 4 November, so the dust will have settled by the 18th and there should also by then be intelligent speculation about who is likely to be appointed to what position. The US, remember, is now South Africa’s largest export market, and the second biggest investor into South Africa.

The workshop programme includes:

  • An overview of US-African relations
  • The Bush legacy in Africa
  • The election itself: How America voted
  • Obama/McCain: The domestic challenges
  • Obama/McCain: The international challenges
  • US and Africa: What can we expect?
  • What should South Africa's approach be?

We will have no fewer than 12 speakers selected for their experience and knowledge on these various topics. And to maximise audience participation we have included two panel discussions on the programme.
