Description

The Cederberg is one of the more striking of areas in the District, which is quite something to say of a striking district. With its sandstone mountain formations and dry west coast coastline, the region is nothing if not spectacular. Which makes it one of the biggest tourist destinations in the district, especially in spring and summer time when temperatures can soar. Not just its mountain ranges, the region is also famous for its indigenous rock art, its historical buildings, birdlife, fynbos, the medicinal 'buchu' plant and, of course, 'veldskoene'.

The Cederberg Municipality is bordered by Matzikama to the north, Bergrivier to the south, the Atlantic Ocean to the west, and the Northern Cape Province to the east. Geologically it falls part of the Cape Fold Belt, which accounts for the spectacular sandstone mountain ranges in the region.

Cederberg has one of the smaller populations in the West Coast DM, and contributed only 9.9% to the district GDPR in 2004. The economy is driven by:

  • Agriculture, forestry and fishing
  • Wholesale and retail trade
  • Catering and accommodation
  • Manufacturing
  • Financial and business services

In terms of employment too, agriculture is the biggest sector in the municipality, employing 57% of the working labour force. The long term ramifications here are that a seemingly undiversified economy could be vulnerable to drastic changes in the economy, in the climate, in any number of things. For now though, the industry is healthy, and stable. Agro-processing is also a strong employer in the municipality. While not adding as much value to the economy perhaps as some service industries such as tourism and financial services, the industry is the livelihood of a large proportion of the population and for that it is important.

Cederberg growth strategy
The Cederberg growth strategy is aligned with national and provincial government's initiatives, and is characterised by four significant spatial components which are key areas of growth and economic opportunity:

  • Regional motors
  • Regional development corridors
  • Regional transport corridors
  • 'Leader' towns

These motors and corridors are being positioned to drive growth and development from an already existing base and will be centred on existing infrastructure and facilities in the areas deemed most likely to be of industrial and investment interest.
